September 26, 2011..... WARNING DENTURE WEARERS

Denture adhesives contain ZINC.  Excessive and prolonged zinc intake has been associated with serious health problems.
Recent case reports have suggested that excessive absorption of zinc from denture adhesives may be associated with the development of copper deficiency and the subsequent development of hematological disease and myelopathy (disease of the spinal cord and bone marrow).  Copper deficiency in humans can result in both anemia and neurological symptoms affecting walking and balance.

If you use denture adhesive to help secure your denture,
DO NOT use more product than recommended in the product instructions.  If product oozes off the denture into your mouth you are using too much.
DO NOT use excess product for poorly fitting dentures as this may impair your health.

Denture adhesive is not a solution for poorly fitting dentures.
Consult your dentist regularly to ensure you have properly fitting dentures.
You might also want to consider a few implants to help secure the denture and eliminate the need for adhesive any longer.

September 25, 2011..... FLORIDA PROBE

I am proud to tell my patients of a relatively new computerized probe for diagnostic use that is available at our office. I have always promised my patients the most modern approach to their dental health. The computerized probe has and will revolutionize dentistry in its ability for early diagnosis.

It is a policy of this office to educate every patient as to options for their optimal dental health and we promise to always do just that. For the good dental health of my patients, I cannot advise or adjust the quality of my diagnosis on the basis of “will my insurance cover this?” Practices that do this can and do create supervised neglect over the life of the patient’s teeth. In today’s modern dentistry, many technological advances are available to assist in reducing tooth loss and controlling periodontal disease, the number one cause of tooth loss in adults. As a result, I am taking a stand with the following policy to my patients.

“This office is dedicated to optimal health for our patients. This simply means I will offer to you, my patient, the very best and most modern approach to quality dentistry that exists. This means I will not make any judgment or diagnosis based on what the insurance covers, but on what I know as a professional is best for the optimal dental health of my patients.”

If you have any questions regarding this, please direct them to me personally, or to a member of my staff. We believe it is in your best interest to know we are an office which believes in offering our patients the options for better, higher levels of dental health and we want you to know we will always promise to do just that! Thank you for taking time for you health.

February 20, 2011..... Blood Pressure

High blood pressure (HBP) is a serious condition that can lead to coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, and other health problems, and is often asymptomatic. We don't want any of our patients to be a victim of this silent killer.

When you come to our office for you hygiene recare appointments expect to have your blood pressure taken. This is now a routine part of our holistic approach to dental and health care. We have already referred several patients to their medical doctors for previously undiagnosed hypertension.

You might be interested to know that I am a volunteer member of the NYC Medical Reserve Corps

The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) enhances New York City’s emergency preparedness by ensuring that a trained group of volunteer health professionals is ready to respond to health emergencies.  During an emergency, volunteers might be called on to assist with medical evaluation, patient education, triage/screening, vaccination, and/or distribution of medication.  The primary role of the MRC is to help distribute antibiotics or vaccine during an emergency requiring mass prophylaxis.  Volunteers may also be called upon to assist the City with mass sheltering operations, such as during a coastal storm, or to assist with medical surge capacity, for example during a pandemic influenza outbreak.

December 20, 2009..... Oral Cancer Detection

New tool to help detect oral cancer early.

When found early, oral cancer patients have an 80 to 90 % survival rate.

As part of a routine examination Dr. Hersh is now using the latest in oral cancer screening devices.  The Trimira Identafi is a special tool that emits light of specific wavelengths, which helps differentiate between healthy and diseased tissues in the body.

Trimira's® new Identafi® 3000 Ultra uses Fluorescence and Reflectance technology to enhance visualization of mucosal abnormalities such as oral cancer or premalignant dysplasia that may not be apparent to the naked eye. Unlike other fluorescence technologies and dye systems, the Identafi® 3000 Ultra is Multi-Spectral with three distinct color wavelengths, making it easier to distinguish lesion morphology and vasculature thereby reducing false positives.

December 25, 2005..... New Dental X-ray Technology

Now there's a remarkable new dental X-rays technology that creates virtually limitless views of you face, neck, teeth, jaw, and skull, for more complete treatment planning and diagnosis.

It's called 3-D cone beam imaging or CBVT. It is fast, simple, and completely painless. In seconds, this new form of X-ray tomography scans the structures of your head and converts these images into detailed studies, exposing the patient to only 1/10 to 1/5 of the radiation of a convential medical CT scanner.

Dr. Robert Hersh joined Drs. Alan Winter and Alan Pollack in forming i-dontics Imaging of Brooklyn .  i-dontics Imaging brings the latest breakthrough in 3-D Cone Beam Volumetric Tomography for superior patient care to Brooklyn.
